Refining Sales Copy & Tracking is VERY Important
WHY TRACK RESPONSE RATES?
Would you ever give a telemarketer $1,000 and not ask
to see results? We wouldn't either! Then, why is it SO
common that people that market products and services online
spends hundreds or even thousands of dollars online and
just "sit back and wait for the sales to come in?"
It's astounding. We would not be surprised if nearly
95% of all Internet "marketers" threw their
money away like this. To be an effective marketer and
one of the few that really makes money on the web, we
need to be smart about it. We need to always improve our
process and refine techniques to measure how well we're
doing.
So, here's a few tips on how to track responsiveness:
- Free method - any link that you place
in an ad can have a unique identifier to let you know
where the lead came from. Of course, you have to be
monitoring with a package that can show you referrers
(URL where the visitor came from). Many web hosting
accounts today will display the referrer in their control
panel at no extra cost.
To use this correctly, you will place a link in your
email -for instance- that looks like this:
http://www.whatever.com/?track01
*for HTML emails, use
this as the link <A HREF...>; but only display
http://www.whatever.com
*doing it this way makes it a better
choice than the next free method
When you log in to view your stats, you can see how
many times someone was referred by that exact URL and
that is how many times someone "visited" your
site. If you have a sophisticated enough statistics
package, you can even see how many of them clicked-through
(otherwise, you don't know if they just open your email
OR if they opened the email and then clicked the link).
If you have a "page view," that means someone
viewed/opened your email. But, if you have a "page
view" AND a "visitor/unique IP", then
you had someone click through to your site.
The most sophisticated (and low-cost) analyzer we have
found is Sawmill Stats. We have reviewed Analog, Webalizer,
and even WebTrends; but nothing comes close to the power
and accuracy of Sawmill Stats. The beauty of this stats
software is that it can give you so many detailed reports.
Things like:
- What search terms people used to find your site!
- What search engines they used
- Paths (page-by-page) that visitors took through
your site
- Amount of time your visitors spend on a given
page (how interested they are)
- Which search engine spiders visited your site,
and a whole lot more...
- Another free method - In your web
directories, create a subfolder under your images folder
named by date of the email release (and a unique identifier,
if needed). For instance:
<root>/images/010104-1/
Then, create a 1 pixel x 1 pixel gif file (ask your
web designer, if needed). This takes 2 seconds to do.
Place the file in the appropriate folder, and then put
a link to the image in your email. This assumes that
you have some good working knowledge of how to embed
images (via the Internet) in your emails. It also assumes
that you have access to some sort of statistics that
will show referrer (as mentioned above). You will know
how many "hits" you had by the number of people
accessing that directory. A "page view" means
that someone opened the email, and a "visitor/unique
IP" means they also clicked through to your site.
This method isn't as good as the previous method because
your stats package may not differentiate between "page
views" and "visitors" for the folder
itself.
This method is better in one way, though, because your
link can be normal (and not look like an affiliate link).
You can overcome this in the previous method if you
following the notes.
We used to use this exclusively before we found out
about Sawmill Stats (mentioned above) and later about
Hypertracker (see below) and Interneka
Affiliate (see below). Both of those packages
are great for tracking click-throughs from your affiliates,
tracking leads, and conversions.
- HyperTracker
- This web-based tracking system is AWESOME and is more
or less a revamped version of Adminder. It's easy-to-use,
powerful, and relatively inexpensive for what you get.
Plans are $19.95 per month (or a 14 day trial) with
no committment or you can get discounts for longer periods.
14-day trial period.

curve, but it's well worth it... if you get stuck, contact

- AWeber
- highly recommended in the industry, but we have no
first-hand experience. They have a generous affiliate
program, so that might be a factor in why we see so
many affiliates. They do offer a GREAT signup bonus,
however [Read

*Offers a 30-day money-back guarantee

REFINING COPY
Now, as you might have guessed, we will have several
subjects and several sales copy for EACH of what should
be several products/services we offer. We will try each
one out and test the responses. Over a short period of
time, you will be able to easily identity which ads work
well and which ones do not. HyperTracker
will even color-code your ads for you.
Afterwards, you can analyze the ads (successful and failed)
to determine what might be the reason one worked and the
other did not. The best path to take is Test, Test, and
then Test some more! It will be well worth your time and
your increased sales should justify your effort.
