Free Safelists?
LISTSERVERS
"Listservers" aren't really marketed as Safelists,
but for arguments sake; that is what they tend to be used
for --mainly by SPAMMERS.
They work like this:
- You search for companies that host these lists
- Then you browse through hundreds of categories looking
for lists that apply to you
- Once you find relevant lists, you can subscribe to
them. Subscribing to the list is done by way of sending
a special subscribe email to the list moderator or through
the website
- Once approved, you will receive a confirmation email
which you must open and reply to join the list (double
opt-in). The list moderator (the person who set up and
manages the list) has the option to automatically approve
each subscription request or they can approve each request
manually. After you are approved, you will receive a
welcome email with the email address you can now use
to post to the list
- When you send an email message to that email address,
the listserver software system will mass-email your
message to everyone on the list
MODERATED vs. UNMODERATED
"Listservers" (much like bulletin boards)
fall into 2 sub-categories: moderated and unmoderated.
A moderated list means that the moderator can post to
the list OR the moderator will allow members to post emails
AFTER each individual email has been manually approved
for content.
An unmoderated lists allows any member of the list to
post a message with no approval process.
Examples of current companies providing "listservers"
are Yahoo Groups and Topica. There used to be many others
such as Onelist, Globelist and Egroups, but over time;
they disappeared.
Posting to the unmoderated lists is simple because all
you need to do is put the list email addresses into group
mailing software and then just "blast" out your
ad. Because this was so easy and there was no way to control
the amount of times you could post to a list, a lot of
these lists became used and abused by SPAMMERS.
To curb this type of abuse, Yahoo Groups (the largest
current "listserver") created a digest feature,
which is basically an email that contains all the emails
that were sent to you in a given week. This lowered the
number of messages that members of the list got bombarded
with and let them quickly scan messages for anything relevant.
Since many people switched to receiving digests instead
of individual emails, the response rates for marketers
advertising with these list dropped dramatically because
the individual would have to go through a little bit more
trouble than simply clicking on your email (they had to
log in to view). So, since few people will log in to read
a soliciation; the response rates tumbled.
Although, there are still some who subscribe to these
unmoderated lists and have chosen to NOT receive their
emails in a digest format (either do not know better or
prefer it). So, there are still a few individuals who
elect to receive individual messages and may respond to
your email ad.
