What is permission based email marketing exactly? Pitfalls, myths, and tips

SPAM is a tricky thing. Unless someone emailed you first requesting an email back; it can technically be considered SPAM. That is a pretty broad and unrealistic definition, but it can still get you into trouble if you are not careful [Learn More about SPAM].

So, the BIG question is how do we -as marketers- get our message out there without spamming? Well, there are several legitimate ways to do this and here's a basic breakdown:

  • Safelists - safelists are great for marketing at a very low cost. Safelists are many, many "marketers" that have agreed to receive each others email. The drawback is that everyone is trying to sell and no one wants to buy. This is basically advertising to advertisers... who's actually reading?

    Some do buy, however, and that's your market. You just need something that other "marketers" will want or need. More than anything, safelists are just a good, cheap way to test your headlines and sales copy before launching a campaign.

  • Newsletters - You can develop your own site newsletter and send out valuable information to your members. In the mix, you can subtly throw in a few offers after you've earned their trust. This is a great, free method; but it requires a lot of work to deliver good content and to get people to sign up.
